Catlife Poem by Tomi Adenekan

Catlife

It was a life or death leap.
His determined feet pound rhythmically behind my tail
Heart pounding, I scurry across the path.
The rush of his feet on the leaves nearly as fast as the beat of my catheart
Ahead, the wire fence only a few yards away - my lifeline.
I jump the last huddle, hanging on by the skin of my teeth,
The victory leap placed me on the fence, safe at last.

I hear a deep silence.
I look down from the safety of my perch at the fox below
You'll just have to go without your midnight snack today.
Again.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I woke up in the middle of the night to some strange noises. Looking out of the window, I witnessed a cat escape the claws of a fox. This is for the cat that got away.
