Changing Tides Poem by Adam Holmes

Changing Tides

Drunken man stumbles onto the street
If you have nothing to drink to, do it anyway
Slurred speech says nothing but explains it all
For this I laugh
He will pay for that tomorrow

Tin soldier stands always at attention
If you don’t lead you best follow
Melodramatic mind guide the way
For this I smile
Have a lovely day

Clerk sits at his station
If all you do is work, how do you breathe
Types on the register, no emotion
For this I frown
Another life caught in a crunch

Patient waits to leave his bed
If you’re dying you should be living
Years of foolishness yield moments of remorse
For this I weep,
Another sand castle washes to sea

I sit and see it all
If you’re not watching, you’re being watched
One day tides will turn
For this I think
Change comes quick, I hesitate to blink
