Chasing Elusive Rainbows Poem by Howard Michael Bricker

Chasing Elusive Rainbows

I was young
the world seemed bright, beautiful, and free.
I lived in timeless moments,
watching my troubles flow out to the sea
The swift hours of my youth were lost
caught up in the quick currents of life's moving streams
never to be relived
brought back into reality but, only in dreams
hiding behind barriers during this wasteful phase
cloaked in facades and pretenses trapped, in a maze
desperately clinging to images atop of a cloudlike plateau
only to realize its an audience of one in this show
afraid to free our true self for all to see
needing to unleash compassion love and humility
unable to cast away selfishness and anger
yearning to find peace and tranquility
waiting
waiting to be carried out to sea
waiting to be set free
locked into the rigid framework of our own mind
wasting our lives arguing irrelevance of all kind
chasing elusive rainbows that seem to disappear
having all knowledge and answers
while listening with deaf ears
empty and lonely is the arc on top of the rainbows peak
where is the happiness and pot of gold we seek?
waiting
hoping that with age wisdom will arise
perhaps, awakening at a distant sunrise
