Chineke Is Not Chineke Poem by Echezona Ononukwe

Chineke Is Not Chineke

From their snowy land
to our earthen soil
they came with their deity,
dwelling in their holy scripts,
omniscient and omnipotent...

Your head aches and are treated
your faeces darken and are diagonised
they say you have a fever
they say your blood pressure is high...

The wisdom of their oracle
travels through our bloodstreams,
searching our demaged veins and organs...

What more can we say
about their wisdom?

Our oracle is defeated
by their Oracle
let he who rejects his roots
find a solace in an alien God,
so they say...

The wisdom of the white men
still baffles my senses;
could it be that they are deities
we no nothing about?

Let the white men
tell me the difference
between chineke and Chineke
let them tell me
whether our herbs have no doses
let them say if leprosy
is not a curse from chukwu
to those who have erred...

My knowledge pricks me;
could it be that I ask lots of queries?
If these puzzles have no answers,
then Chukwu is not chukwu...
