Christmas Thoughts Poem by Janine O'Callaghan

Christmas Thoughts

The time has come, the old clock said, to say goodnight and go to bed.
Saint Nicholas is on his way with gifts and goodies on his sleigh.
He wants to know if you've been good and played at being Robin Hood?
The poor defending.

Did you go and spend your dough on kith and kin? He needs to know.
Or did you save some for the poor? The Salvos knocking at your door,
the Smiths, perhaps, and Lifeline too, it's really the right thing to do;
(when Christmas spending)

Because some of us can now enjoy Christmas with a brand new toy,
should we not stop and think about the lonely folk who can't get out?
And kids who live in squalor and dirt? You know it really doesn't hurt
(And does much mending)

To give to those who need some love and haven't met the Christmas dove.
She comes and spreads her pearly wings. Warm friendship, joy and love she brings.
Please share the happiness you've got and pray to God it's not your lot
(God's will depending)

To end up like these pitiful folk. I know, you think this is a joke;
and that you'll never have to be dependent on some Charity.
But don't you realise my friend? They never thought this'd be their end.
(their short lives ending)

So share this lovely day with all friends and kin who come to call.
But spare a little time to think - they could be yours - or mine;
with nothing but a crust of bread and cold hard concrete for a bed,
(no warmth descending.)

Merry Christmas, bright New Year; enjoy your food, and wine and beer.
God Bless and keep you safe and well; And when you hear that loud church Bell,
please take some time this happy day to thank Him for his kindly ways,
the light His son brought to the world and life, and love - and joy unfurled.
(and Peace unending.)
