Coalmine, The Pit Poem by joseph lonergan

Coalmine, The Pit

Coalmine The Pit

My dad was one I remember him well
He was so strong yes anyone could tell
I remember his face all covered in black
When he got home yes my father Jack

I remember his lunch box his little square tin
And mam always worried about all those men
They were a breed they stronger than most
My dad the biggest that being no boast

I remember the day knock on the door
Our priest standing there news cut to the core
Dad is now buried years have moved on
Most of his mates they too have gone

Now here I'm a man I'm following his shoes
I'll remember his advice don'ts and the do's
I'm recalling his laugh I'm remembering his wit
As here I am now I'm going down the pit
