Dark And Lonely Roads Poem by Emily C. Knight

Dark And Lonely Roads

Dark and lonely roads. The snow piles up in slushy puddles around my feet.
I look for him where I know he will not be.
The ghost of this connection eludes me, stumbling my way back to sanity.
Places unfamiliar, yet as known to me as the trees that haunt my dreams of he that was before and before.

…how strange the things she has done

I remember that girl—I look at her now with fascination, a distant, buried part of myself. I know I can call on her wild spirit if the need arises. And this is comforting, as I sit here in the dusky sun.

Where would I be? Who would I be without? ...

Dark and lonely roads. I see them now from afar. The petals of flowered trees blow across my yard.
He smiles at me as I squint hard, into the sun.
Disoriented, falling—his arms catch, pull?
I am out of myself, in places unfamiliar, watching the lonely girl on the road fall into the flowers in the yard.
