Dark Chords Poem by Philip Martin

Dark Chords

Why bring such pain to those we love so dear?
The day you heard their voice first sing, why rue,
When heart and mind does yearn to feel them near
And eyes would light the stars to see them through?

How best to dull this ache that leads us false?
Dark chords that circumvent your mind, why heed,
When quarrels only curse the lovers waltz
And spite can only bring such hearts to bleed?

Then what new song shall swell and set us free
To hush the verse inside and tame the lie,
To harmonise an angel's melody
And complement her every lullaby?
Such tunes may play yet not be overheard
'Less lovers take each other by their word.
