Do Not Make Me Promise Poem by ABRAHAM AMANING

Do Not Make Me Promise

Rating: 4.5

Do you promise to love me?
No I do not promise to love you.
Do you promise to hold me even when I turn gray?
No not until you turn gray.
Will that love exist even in death?
No, for what has life got to do with death?
Do you promise to be my knight in shining armor?
No, for what has love got to do with war?
Then why do you bother me with these words?
Guess it's all been a waste of time.
Sorry but I think its better we go our separate ways.
No my love not yet.
Why do you call me your love when you don't mean what you say?
Before the moon light fade let me speak.
Under this weeping willow hear me out.
You claimed I do not mean what I say.
But for what are the guarantees of words when I won't live forever?
If I say in simple words I love you.
I would be betraying the intensity of my heart.
I would be understating the seriousness of my emotions.
But yes, I do not promise to love you because the promises of men are fragile and breakable.
Fallible as I am, please let me learn to love you.
For the more mistakes I make in the process.
We will have memories that can last even when we are gray.
You want a knight in shining armor.
But you forget that one's ability to count the stars do not mean he can touch it.
Therefore shining armor wouldn't a gallant soldier make.
If you still want us to go our separate ways I wouldn't blame you.
But please do not make me promise
For what I feel is more complex that what I say…! !
