Donkeywork

Rating: 5.0

An ancient donkey grazing peacefully.
Retired from the world of work he knew.
I wonder if in dreams he can still see
the golden sands beneath a sky of blue.
Where he would carry children patiently
walk slowly as he was expected to.
He does recall those days quite happily.
If he could talk, I think he would tell you
I miss the golden days of youth long gone,
the little children having rides on me.
But I grew old, too old to carry on
I could no longer do it easily..
gave up the only work I’d ever done
It was time to retire gracefully.
