El Viento's Revenge Poem by Nika McGuin

El Viento's Revenge

Rating: 2.5

The wind seemed to carry
its brown leaves right in my direction
as if it had been seeking me out
they then proceeded to pound my windshield
which led me to ponder just how much longer
it would be shielding me from the wind
not very much longer if left
to El Viento, the raging wind spirit

When I at last ventured out of my car
the wind gushed forward at full force to confront me
its leaves, twigs, old McDonald's receipts, and more
all began to pummel me, leaving me stretched out
on the dank pavement like a bad papier-mâché experiment
then and only then did El Viento feel
his revenge was truly complete

Now, you may be wondering just what I'd done
to deserve and bring forth vehement wrath?
Well, that I would tell you - were it not
that just the mentioning of the act
would rekindle El Viento's wrath
which would once more be pointed in my direction
trust me, it's not a roller coaster
that you would want to ride twice

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

This poem is the polar opposite of FLORETTE'S WOODS. In the latter Florette exists in a garden space of harmony with nature in which all that she sees and touches is scaled to her human identity. And she is the most gracious resident of that place. But the wind is malign and relentless. You don't tell us the reason for its ire and its targetting you. It thus comes across to us readers as particularly alienating. These are both visionary poems, but the first one treats nature in the Romantic sense of our partner, our relative, our home. EL VIENTO is nature in its vicious, destructive, unforgiving appearnce. And we live in a universe of both Natures. BTW Your poems this afternoon have caught me in a philosophical mood. I'm interpreting them thematically. B-U-T this poem has a wonderful flow to it, the tone is intimate and pulled me into the situation. When I realized the wind had actually knocked you down, I wanted to rush forward to help you get up. Of course, then EL VIENTO would stalk me too, but so it goes - FRIENDSHIP IS STRONGER THAN FEAR!
