Elementary Tricks Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Elementary Tricks

Outdated yet ageless,
Is the use of elementary tricks.
By those who insist,
Their intentions had been innocent.

Call they will,
On their cellphones to do.
To intend to begin an argument.
That is refused by another.
Who already knows,
How to avoid a mind like this.
With a pleasant disconnection.
Showing it known,
This childishness...
Is not on their priority list.

Then unsatisfied,
To them what had been done.
That same one to call,
Will use someone else's cellphone.
Knowing it not to be their own.
Voicing a concern.
To have this believed...
A negative response to receive,
Will be heard and expected to get.
But this to expect,
Was left in a text message.
Observed and read,
That had nothing but best wishes.
And nothing more but that to express.

Outdated yet ageless,
Are those elementary childish tricks.
Hoping the use of them,
Will not be noticed...
By someone who has grown,
To have been around too many blocks.
Although not watched to know,
One's life experiences to obtain...
Childish games to leave that way.
Left to play with those who stay children.

"How did you know,
Someone would stoop that low...
To play a game like that."

-As a child,
I did childish things myself.
But as I grew older to age,
I began to notice...
The minds of children,
Remaining to stay that way.
Young.
Attempting to be clever.
Yet...
Afraid of blooming to grow.
Beyond elementary school.
Believing life to live it,
Is their personal playground! -
