Estoile And Etoile

Dear Carl,

When I came upon estoile and etoile
in my Chambers Dictionary,
I suspected that 'star' was once 'tar'
and that back then
a tar with wavy points was a star.

Connotation, I suspect,
made things not stay that way -
'star' became what it is today;
and for a word for a wavy-pointed star,
dear Carl,
we're happy with the French 'estoile'.

Doug

Ps in heraldry,
a straight-pointed star is called a mullet.
