Exceptionalism Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Exceptionalism

The end nears,
For exceptionalism.
And comparisons claimed,
To be double standards.

There are many who view,
Their destructive mayhem...
And acts of violence,
No different than teenage...
Vandalism.
Or practical jokes.
Provoked to bully children,
In playgrounds.
Or after school.

These same minds climb steps,
To the Capitol...
Of the United States.
Entering in,
Through broken doors.
And glass smashed windows.
Threatening lawmakers,
And others supporting rules...
To obey.
With death.

And...
This activity is compared,
To the Black Lives Matter...
Movement.
A movement highlighting,
Police brutality, injustices.
Disparities.
And a history,
Of blatant racism.

Ignorance condoned.
And shown to allow displayed,
Is an exceptionalism.
Those excused,
To do as they please...
When and wherever to dare it.
Is an exceptionalism.
Anyone who believes,
They are all of 'that'...
And more of it to come.
Have been taught,
They are the chosen ones.
And...
Like spoiled children,
Given what they demand...
Will stand upon a soap box,
To lead a band...
Of crazed insane vigilantes,
In acts of destruction.
With this done to do...
And claim,
Free speech that entitles...
A living in a democracy offers.
