Fairweather Friends Poem by Francis Duggan

Fairweather Friends

On the material ladder of success you have climbed far
And many do tell you of how great you are
But among your admirers do you have one true friend
If your luck in life changed on whom you could depend
Who would remain as your friend when you are financially down
They have many fairweather friends the wealthy of the town
The friends and admirers of the wealthy in numbers does grow
But of who their true friends are of they will only come to know
If they grow poor and of friends are in need
That rats desert the sinking ship is a truism indeed
As one of the town's wealthy people your friends and admirers multiply
But if your financial circumstances change for the worse on them do not rely
To come to your aid when you are financially down
They have many fairweather friends the wealthy of the town.
