Fighting In The Land Of The Taliban Poem by Jenna Rose

Fighting In The Land Of The Taliban

Nine decades ago we were fighting on the Western Front
This decade we are fighting in the deserts of Iraq
We have washed our hands of the enemy's blood
The President's armies have grown weary and less strong
Fighting 7,000 miles from home
Can injure the body as well as the mind and soul
The Taliban has no business but combat and massacre;
Their CEO was hung by a rope in the town center
They have no comprehension of peace or of love
The know only of killing and rage, which is what they have been taught since they came of age
Where the President sent men to build hope and tranquil times
There the Taliban sings the songs of the Jihad
The bombs are always falling, men chanting the mantra of war, never will they cease
Men die in the desert, planting roadside bombs to kill one another
They yell in fury as they collapse in the desert sand
Buzzards creep silently through the sky looking for a feast
They pick up arms and legs that are strewn across they sand
They are such horrible beasts
Blood of commanders and cadets on the weeds and in the dirt
The Major General had prearranged their deaths by making war seem so romantic so that they would enlist
They knew that they could lose their fight and die
Yet they chose to protect us
They knew that if they lost they would leave parents, spouses, and even children behind
Yet they chose to protect us
