First Date Poem by Michael John Cook

First Date

One more glass of whiskey,
Downed and another poured
Pacing back and forth,
Nervously across the floor
The second hand on the clock,
Ticking slower than ever before
As the minutes grow longer,
Delaying what was in store
The sweat now staining my shirt,
That I had ironed only an hour before
My feelings so up and down,
As the whiskey took journey once more
Crazy to be in such a state,
I had been on a first date before
But there was a reason this must go well,
This was a girl that I truly adored
Over the gums, was sent another shot,
The whiskey taste becoming quite a bore
My confidence now fuelling my emotion,
As I took a peek through the panel of the door
For what reason? as it was still early,
I still search an answer for
But to my surprise, there she stood,
Five metres from my door or even four
She shone with vulnerability,
Perhaps she was nervous all the more,
I straightened myself out,
Praying harder than I had before
Then I casually threw my coat over a shoulder,
And I slowly opened up the door
She hesitated as if caught unawares,
This moment seemed so pure
I gave her a kiss on the cheek,
She smelled like angels would I'm sure
I then offered her my hand,
The depths of our feelings to explore
She smiled as she slipped her hand into mine,
The chemistry hard now to ignore,
And with all the life I had left,
I would fight to keep her, I swore
For never had I felt this way,
And never had I been so sure
