so you’re sitting
there
on the couch and i can
swear
that i can see the sadness
drip from you like
dew drops from a blade of grass
and it takes all of your energy
to look up at me and
force a smile.
yours is the saddest smile i have ever seen.
the t.v. drones in the background
your only companion and you
know the characters in the shows
like you know all the darkest corners
in your lonely cold house.
the lines around your eyes
tell the tale of grief
and the downturn of your
lips
speak of the unsurmountable
mountain that is your pain
your head snaps up
as you sense me observing you
and i see your sad smile
and i see the lines that
tell all
and you ask me as i
simply look at you
'how was your day? '
