Freedom Poem by Meraj Ahmed

Freedom

So you do late night parties,
Sleep till 12 in the morning,
Eat whatever you feel like,
speak whatever rubbish is on your mind,
run errands on the most expensive cars
chill out, live in your comfort zone all day long,
And thus, you say you are free,
You have freedom, freedom of choice, of expression.
But o boy! Isn't that a very narrow idea of freedom,
I don't consider you free,
You are a slave,
A slave of your comfort zone,
A slave of the freedom you have got
Real freedom comes from inside, from indifference,
It arrives when your ability to react is
Overpowered by your choice to let go,
It arrives when the price of your watch
Doesn't affect the way you walk,
When the logo on your shirt doesn't decide who you shake hands with,
When your smile is not dependent on the complement of others,
When your friends are not decided by the language they speak,
Or the ideas they carry,
When you listen to understand and not to reply,
When you get liberated by love and not enslaved.
In that moment of magic, freedom arrives
Lest you are a slave,
Slave of your thoughts, your ego, your beliefs,
And your "freedom".
