French Connection Poem by Douglas Scotney

In a book in English you come across 'louche'*.

You look it up in your Enger,
see it's the French word for 'shifty-eyed'
and look it up in your FrEnger.

It's 'shifty-eyed' alright;
but 'louche' is 'soup ladle' too.

You don't get the connection.

The author's name is French.
A 'botte' is a bundle of carrots,
a thrust in fencing
and a wellington.
There's a place in Soria, Spain,
called Boton.
