Gagged Poem by David Wood

Gagged

Another letter came today
Another poet is silenced
In another part of the world

Words spoke of another
Persecution, a fellow poet
Who languishes in prison

Once again free speech is denied

Poets of the free world have
A choice we can remain silent
We can hide under the covers

We can write love poems
Or sweet poems of nature
We can write beautiful sonnets

Or we can take up the fight

We can call for Amnesty
We can use the power of
Our pens and keyboards

A single poet speaks out and
Is detained a thousand poets
Can cry for justice to set him

Free

Much mightier than the sword
Our pens can and do right wrongs
Sadly there are too few of us

Where are all the poet warriors?
