POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
George Wallace, American Independent Party candidate for president in 1968, was shot. The attempt on his life prevented his campaign and gave the Southern white racist votes he would have gotten back to Republican Nixon who therefore defeated Democrat Hubert Humphrey.

In later years, George Wallace would go to black congregations
and ask forgiveness for his former racism.

Newsweek wrote that had Wallace not eaten a hamburg
before the shooting. he would have had an
easier time healing. The bullet took the rotting meat
with it through his intestines giving him peritonitis.
