Gnomes Are Not Dwarves Poem by Herbert Nehrlich

Gnomes Are Not Dwarves

Rating: 4.5

A gland that fails to outsecrete
its hormones, head to bunioned feet
will interfere with human health
and, also, naturally with wealth.
They say that man must reach for food
up into trees, if in the mood.
For this man needs to have some height
or be exceptionally bright.
That's why we have small men called gnomes
they live in standard issue homes
but are too short to reach and grasp
(and if they jump they fall and gasp) ,
these little guys spend day and night
in dreams of growing to great height
But, unbeknownst and also sad
their chances are quite simply bad,
the gland sits on the Turkish saddle
a gnome is born without a paddle.

Turkish Saddle refers to the sella turcia,
in the skull, seat of the pituitary gland.
