God, Give Us Men! Poem by Josiah Gilbert Holland

God, Give Us Men!

Rating: 5.0

GOD, give us men!
A time like this demands
Strong minds, great hearts, true faith and ready hands;
Men whom the lust of office does not kill;
Men whom the spoils of office can not buy;
Men who possess opinions and a will;
Men who have honor; men who will not lie;
Men who can stand before a demagogue
And damn his treacherous flatteries without winking!
Tall men, sun-crowned, who live above the fog
In public duty, and in private thinking;
For while the rabble, with their thumb-worn creeds,
Their large professions and their little deeds,
Mingle in selfish strife, lo! Freedom weeps,
Wrong rules the land and waiting Justice sleeps.

This poem is deep, unusually meaningful and very insightful. It tells of the need for bravery and courage in life. It motivates the courageous to be persistently courageous in the line of a good course and never to get deterred. It is a poem the relevance of which will forever be emphasized.

Although this was written shortly after the American CivL Was it os especially relevant today. This should be required reading for every member of Congress, Senate and the Supreme Court. In fact it should be required reading for EVERY American. It should be posted on the entry doors of every Governing Body everywhere in the world
