He Has Never Fought In A War Poem by Francis Duggan

He Has Never Fought In A War

He has never fought in a war or ever used a gun
And to avoid a punch up he would turn around and run
But if everyone were like him World Peace would by now be won
And his mother till the day she died was proud to call him son.

He is close to if not ninety his wife dead a decade of years
They were married close to six decades he still remembers her in tears
He is a great grandfather and quite lucid for his age
One with the greyness that the years bring and the wisdom of a sage.

He worked hard all of his working years for him never an easy pay
But he will not make the news headlines on the day he passes away
Not one seen as a hero just another peace loving man
Who has worked hard for his livelihood in his long working span.

He has never fought in a war or been any good at sport
Though to his beloved family he was a great support
Devoted to his children and a man who loved his wife
But not one parade or party for to celebrate his life.
