Her Dream Is To Live In Inverloch Poem by Francis Duggan

Her Dream Is To Live In Inverloch

Her dream is to live in Inverloch in south Gippsland's coastal country
In mudbrick house built on the high ground where she can look out at the sea
Alone in her room in the morning enjoying a nice cup of tea
Away from polluted suburbia, unhurried and totally free.

She's tired of her humdrum existence her lot of the mother and wife
And she'd like to break shackles that bind her and bring back some peace to her life
Her children of her time demanding their screaming on her nerves so grates
And her husband is down at the local enjoying the night out with his mates.

Fear stops her of breaking her shackles and from it all walking away
Fear of reneging on her duty and fear of what others might say
Her children of ten and eleven with them she feels obliged to stay
For love and for duty and honour there has to be some price to pay.

Her husband has been cheating on her 'he's having his bit on the side'
And she feels a devalued woman and damage been done to her pride
He once showed her lots of affection but that was a long time ago
And loving has turned to loathing and hatred like noxious weed grow.

She married for love not for money she hoped happiness she might gain
But happiness lasted a brief while and only the memory remain
Of something that should or that might be till flame of love flickered and died
She only craved love and affection and that to her has been denied.

Her husband only give her quarter of his earnings just twenty five dollars a day
And she has to work for a living there's food to buy and bills to pay
She cannot walk out on her children there's more than self interest at stake
Her duty comes before self interest and her duty she cannot forsake.

Her dream in these times give her comfort a home in the coastal country
In Inverloch close to Wonthaggi on hill overlooking the sea
Alone in her room in the morning enjoying a nice cup of tea
Away from polluted suburbia, unhurried and totally free
