Homecoming 2 Poem by Gert Strydom

Homecoming 2

Shadows throw enclaves the street full,
the wind rustles through bougainvilleas with thorns,
in the distance neon-lights gleam on the city's towers
and for the bright moon a dog howls and barks madly,
as I open the motor-gate and it rolls in silence
and this Sodom has for many its fascination,
a security-car with a bull with two horns
stand under the streetlamp's amber light
and I know how transient and dark everything is
when an owl calls from high up in the eucalyptus tree,
the doves sing their love-songs to each other,
about my arrival you do clearly bare knowledge
as a bright light burns cheerful on the porch,
the door open and we stare at each other.
