I AM WAITING
When I opened my eyes for the first time,
Sought I, that loving warmth;
That caring hand and that loving presence,
I lay waiting for my Mother.
When I took my first step forward,
Sought I, that secure feeling;
That protective hand and that caring presence,
I stood waiting for my Father.
When I entered my school that first day,
Sought I, that unwavering confidence;
That stern hand and that reassuring presence,
I stood waiting for my Teacher.
When I poured out my heart to her,
Sought I, that unconditional love;
That pure feeling and that magical “yes”,
I stood waiting for my Lover.
When I stood at the threshold of a new life,
Sought I, her hand, that promising hand;
That helpful hand and that lifelong presence,
I stood waiting for my Wife.
When I sat at the hospital bench,
Sought I, a silent prayer, that life-giving hymn;
That fulfilling prayer and that soothing calm,
I sat waiting for my Child.
When years later I sat in the armchair,
Sought I, the small voice of my li’l bird;
That small sweet voice and that tremulous presence,
I sat waiting for my Grandchild.
When finally I lay on my deathbed,
Sought I that soothing and serene end;
That blissful end and that hallowed presence,
I lay waiting for my Curtain-call..
