Pablo Neruda

I Do Not Love You Except Because I Love You

I do not love you except because I love you;
I go from loving to not loving you,
From waiting to not waiting for you

    ....a poem with a confusing title...after reading you find the poet is resigned to his fate....he knows
    even though the person isn't perfect....he still loves....a wonderful write... (Report) Reply

    Very passionate and truthful. He knows he loves her, but only because he is in love with her. He knows her faults and they make him hate her, yet he loves her in the end. Very true. (Report) Reply

    A strange thing this we call love
    An all encompassing feeling. Wow!
    A roller coaster ride that so begins
    Till you eventually either lose or win....

    Good poem, but a bit taxing on our grey cells (Report) Reply

    Dear Poet, you have put us all in confusion..This poem clearly indicates your indepth love. But the love which cannot be accepted, in front of all, whatever may be the reason.But you are trying to ignore it from the fact that you love her a lot and your heart is speaking of it. But to convince self you are talking of extreme ends of hatred.
    The last stanza tells you alone are dying in love, it means either the one you love has died or left you or you never ever spoke of love to her at all. She may be unaware of your love.
    I might have read many comments on it, to catch the meaning of this poem..If you have left us some notes, we could have guessed more easily.
    Fantastic poem..loved reading it... (Report) Reply

    One of my all time favourite poems. Why should I love somebody who does not care for me? ? what is the point in wasting oneself away in unrequited love. Love feeds on love, indeed. (Report) Reply

    For me, the last stanza of this poem holds the key to understanding the pain in the poet's heart. Neruda says clearly...I am the one who / Dies, the only one... He is telling the beloved that he hates that he/she has died. Moreover, the poet says, I will die of love because I love you, .... This is a poem of bereavement; not of unrequited love, but of a mature love by a committed lover for a beloved who has left him behind and his only comfort is the cold and dark of January. Or the cold and dark of his grief turning to self sacrifice (...I am the one who dies..) if only this, his own death, would bring back to life the dead beloved. (Report) Reply

Poem of the Day

poet Algernon Charles Swinburne

I hid my heart in a nest of roses,
Out of the sun's way, hidden apart;
In a softer bed than the soft white snow's is,
Under the roses I hid my heart.
