I Have Written These Poems For Myself Poem by Shalom Freedman

I Have Written These Poems For Myself

I HAVE WRITTEN THESE POEMS FOR MYSELF

I have written these poems for myself
And forgotten the service of God
The love of my family
The defense of Israel and the Jewish people
America and its larger meaning to humanity
I have written these poems for myself
For my own name glory recognition immortality
They have gotten me nowhere
But they have helped me live
I have written these poems for myself
And could have written more
Of much else I care about
But I am this little would- be great man
A failure a fool a self-obsessed writer about himself
A truth- teller sometimes also.
