Immortality Poem by Walter W. Safar

Immortality

Rating: 4.5

The more you try to reveal it, the bigger life's mystery is.
In the golden sarcophagus, many a sovereign found his eternal home,
Those who wanted to become immortal while they lived.
The greater the tomb, the closer you are the immortality, was their motto.
The fewer zeroes there are in your account,
The more of a zero you are in life, their motto is.
The children of the wealthy and the poor learn about artists in school,
Artists whose mother was poverty,
And death covered them in the purple veil of immortality;

The more you try to reveal it, the bigger life's mystery is.
Many artists found their eternal home in small graves,
Artists who barely got by while they were alive, yet became immortal.

The more you try to reveal it, the bigger life's mystery is.
While dictators march the valley of death singing dead poets' verses,
As if they can buy their way into immortality with stolen verses,
While tyrants unquenchably hungry for authority and power
Prosecute the free-minded people,
The songwriter, the poet of life, sings odes to freedom
On his old guitar - the magic harp of peace:
„Let freedom be your shield,
The soul your impenetrable castle,
In your fight against the forces of evil."
Many have been imprisoned in dungeons for these golden words,
Yet they were free, more so than their hangmen.
For these sacred verses they are ready to sacrifice their lives,
Just like frontline soldiers,
Marching towards immortality with their heads held high;

The more you try to reveal it, the bigger life's mystery is.
Some are ready to hunger to keep their soul,
Some are ready to sell it off for power and money
To end up in a golden sarcophagus eventually.
Decaying bodies know no immortality,
Only the soul is eternal.
The more you try to reveal it, the bigger immortality's mystery is.
