In Mind Poem by Serena Blackinton

In Mind

Delving into the deep recesses of my mind
I tread carefully, who knows what I could find!
Here, a minefield, a seemingly innocent patch of ground
There, the questions of youth, a neverending merry-go-round...

A conscience, sitting quietly, and yet still felt
Like the sharp sting of being hit by a belt
A child, alone and forgotten somehow
Unfed, unloved, deprived of the sun till now...

Faces who should mean something, but are fading away
People who left because they could no longer stay
Music, taking up a huge portion of space
Coming and going, leaving nary a trace...

Animals soft and cute, the sound of cheeping
Followed closely by someone weeping
As I look around I realize that person is me
How do I get back out, how can I be free?

And further back in a damp corner somewhere
Is something I thought long dead - despair
And when I feel like I can't take any more
I come upon a seldomly seen door...

Beyond the door is the outside world
The place where my wishes can unfurl
Where rainbows always glow after the rain
And I can forget about all the pain…
