! In The Spirit Of Rumi - 36 - The Rose Told Me

In the garden,
I look at a rose and wonder

Is this rose
laughing with God?
Is it God’s smile, and message, to the earth?
Does it tell
Of God’s goodness, truth, and beauty?
Of God’s stillness? Peace? and silence?

Or if you gazed at it long enough
and carefully enough,
perhaps with a laugh or smile,
in stillness, peace, and silence,
would it tell you everything
that God would have you know?

* * *

For even if you are
a cynic, locked into your own mind
by your own key
and say, oh, it’s just
savage, ruthless nature, competing
with all the other flowers, for the bees –
for nothing but its own selfish ends -
you must admit
that Whoever allowed, invented, made, decreed
the laws for the construction of
such complex, simple beauty (which a bee may never know?)
is pretty cool.

Michael, you make the spiritual accessible and that matters. As to your rose, perhaps she belonged to the Little Prince and is haughty with two thorns of which she is boasts. or perhaps she is the one Jerry gave me on Aalentine's day. You blend the poetic, the metaphysical and the light-hearted with great flair. love always, Allie xxxx

In the spirit of sufis I think: Even though He sends us messages all the time, we are not always capable or willing to read them... but then literacy is a blessing. Everyone will have a different reading of the rose... that too is a blessing

Yes, pretty cool indeed. Yet the rose like anything dies. t x

And from the prospective of the worm who lives inside the rose...if God had not created the rose for him, then where would he live. Beautiful work, Mr. S., as always! !

Pretty cool, indeed, Mr. Shepherd! I had a rose the other day, a hybrid, probably botanically engineered in some botanist's lab, that while it was a bud was just red on the outside, but when it opened in full bloom it was cream colored on the inside, and the red just trimmed the petals, and it was SPECTACULAR. I see holiness in everything...even in a botanist's hand.
