Inner Self Poem by Kalee Skriver

Inner Self

When I look upon my soul what do I see?
My inner self wishing to be noticed
To feel the soft caress of a loving attention
I turn towards the inside to see who I really am

A song of life within the wind
There I can see the leaves, branches, trunk full of life
My mind, the branches reaching out
My heart the roots, holding on and giving strength

I may seem in a melancholy disposition
But you can’t perceive the depth of my fear and pain
Doubt, failure, anger, sadness, and fear of myself
My mind and heart home to complacency

I may seem simple and plain
Yet my mind is full of wonder and wishing
Love, life, faith, joy and hope in beautiful limbs
All the leaves resting in happy marvel

Here in the roots of my heart I seek some hold
To stick fast to in what I believe and grasp the love I feel in faith
Wherever my heart holds I shall find within nourishment
Let love, hope and faith be my roots

This bird, perched in my branches
Whistling, humming, singing the song of dreams
Of wisdom, of growth, and of never ending joy
Ready to embrace a life of knowledge

You may see me and boring or plain
As happy or sad
As confused or wise
But my inner self is more than that

I am a tree of life
My mind the branches, reaching to the sky
My heart the roots holding fast to the truth
Forever growing and broadening my roots in faith
