Innocent Email Poem by John A'Hern

Innocent Email

Innocent email arrived today
From a friend not far away
The content read, then read again
Just saying hello and how are you
Exchanges between friends over backyard fence
She spoke of issues as good friends can
Words used like blows to the head
Death and gloom are her companions
Deep breath taken preparing myself
A visit was made to a sick friend
Two hours of listening to horror stories
A time given a sentence to be served
Time and pain her constant companions
I sat and slowly sank into surrounding darkness
Clearing possessions, her only thought
Clear the decks good for the soul
Tears had flowed until none were left
Able to talk of death and its intent
In a daze we said our farewells
Left her standing on the edge of a precipice
A lonely figure waving farewell
My mind unable to comprehend
I now sit at my desk so confused
Attempting to say what is best
This is the line where I must stop.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I hope that this poem makes sense, I visited a friend after receiving news of her illness. I left feeling numb and confused as to what we see as important when faced with this sort of news. My Friend was cleaning out her home of all her lifetime memories, is this what we all would do while waiting for the end?

3 – (cont.) BUT if I can, physically and mentally close out my time … as I wish, it will be with ice cream in a dish, & with rhyme. Yes, I’ll miss my ‘poet’ friends online when I’m again dust. Yes, I’d say farewell with rhyme, and ice cream IS a must! ! (August …18th ….2019)

2 - (continued) Nearing My End …[ Passing Time While “Passing Away”; Response to John A’Hern’s P H Poem “Innocent Email” ] I do so hope my worldly belongings will be but few …. when it’s MY time to pass from this world; ‘tis true. Now, not sure when my “end” will come, I’m nearly … at the “few” mark. I’m “ready” to go NOW, clearly, (continued)

This is the line where I must stop... Indeed, dear poet, we must stop when an ultimate sorrow overflows, - so does your poem. It is the feeling, not a dexterous and aesthetic arrangement of lines and striking imagery that makes poetry great! The one that cuts to the quick, leaves a scar eventualy to turn a healed wound! I love your piece! Take my dram of solace, just a word of comfort, go on living and sharing!
