International Women's Day - Embrace Equity But They Cherish What They Get Poem by Bernedita Rosinha Pinto

International Women's Day - Embrace Equity But They Cherish What They Get

Women in Europe so full of dexterity
they rush to work and find their stability;
the money they earn gives them confidence
and as they gain their own independence
most of them forget to marry and have children
yet they keep themselves busy and romantic;
as open marriages are their blessings
they feel so empowered with most of their dreams
and have children to love and care for.

Women in Gulf countries are so feminine,
they live in covered faces and long black dresses
to maintain their culture and heritage
as they respect their religion and age old traditions;
but women who go to work in those Gulf countries
from other countries who are known as expatriates,
they work so hard to make their money
so that they can to manage their families back home
in their own countries and to educate their children
in the best of universities;
in this action of struggle they forget their own
health and tranquility as worry keeps them on their toes
as they have to comply to the high expectations
of their families and fulfill their dreams.

In countries like my own country called India
work is considered as worship
and all run to work in the mornings
even by trains or by buses they travel to get there;
like Mumbai is one such city full of womenfolk
who are so diligent and they stick to their jobs
thro their entire lifetime until they are ready to retire.

How and when can woman ever seek equality
when life is such a huge roller coaster
of options and opportunities which keep varying
from place to place, time to time
that as luck favors one who is destined to prosper,
equality escapes those miss their education.

Like those women in Africa dress in such colorful clothes
yet they are always seen with babies in their hands
and they enjoy motherhood though they may have no food
yet they keep themselves so pre-occupied with their chores;
do they not think they deserve a better chance
a better place, a better opportunity
but they never really have the time to chase it?

O' the cycle of life keeps moving so fast
and changing every woman's image from young to old
while displaying feminism which is more worthy than gold
yet woman all over the world always the frontrunners
of nursing generations and upholding motherhood;
yet they never wait to seek fairness, worth and value
as they know life is a passing phase
and they have to cherish what they get.
