It Happens, You Know Poem by Nicole Verrill

It Happens, You Know

It happens, you know
How I lose feelings for one
And gain for another
How every word you say to me
Cuts my heart like thousands of daggers
Struggling to detach the chords of my love
The symphonies of my heart
The melodies of my madness
The love that is not for you.

It happens, you know
How you were 'always there for me'
But somehow I always felt alone
Empty.
Out of every cut that I made
That I still make
Most of them are from your words
Your actions
Your lack of true love
And understanding.

It happens, you know
How you said
Together
We could build bridges
But all you did was tear me down
Create steel gates and marble pillars
To match your heart of stone
To build yourself up
While burning down my softly molded
Driftwood
Fragile heart.

It happens, you know
How I still cry at night
Because you aren't there to listen
To my pleas
To my silent tears
That usually you can catch without hesitation
And see without them falling.
Funny how you no longer listen
To my racking sobs as you cradle me
Rub my back
And whisper 'it'll be okay'.

It's funny how it happens, you know.
One day, you're there
The next
Gone.
