It Is Not Only The Wind... Poem by Reva Kern

It Is Not Only The Wind...

It is not only the wind
When the tides rise -
Who moans so
In the decaying green seaweed?
It is the eternal sob
Of the exploring race!
It is the groan of mankind
Swallowed under the sea

It is the fragments that are
Lived in the fair light -
Before you, on the earth
Are marks of their footsteps -
Reflect with dread that
Which remains of the world
And of a disdainful foot
Not repulsed

Don't make a mistake!
The tenacious fates control
The boundaries
Of your measured steps
Toward the influence of
Impervious things
You will grasp with
Desperate arms

You are not the last!
Others still come
Who follow you
In the infinite dawn
Until the unknown time
Which must not end
