It's Getting Dark Poem by Jayne McGaughey

It's Getting Dark

I lay my head down
it's pounding again
all the mixed messages
deleted and offered
too many goodbyes have been said aloud

I look out the window
the first thing I see
is the hail raining down
it's happy to fall
it's been held up too long

It's dark
so I turn out the light
and I whisper goodbye

The first thing I see
when I look in your eyes
is how you don't want to stay in this life

The first thing I see
when I look in your eyes
is how happy you are

The first thing I see
when I look in your eyes
is how you don't see me
for who I am now

The first thing I see
when I look in your eyes
is how lonely you've become
even though I was here all along

It's getting dark
so I turn out the lights
and I whisper goodbye

My head is pounding
so I lay it down
and out of the corner of my eye
I see out the window
I watch as the hail comes down
raining ice on the warm ground
and as I watch I see you walk by below
you're not turning back

It's getting dark
so I turn off the light
and lay in bed

Whispering every goodbye I had to say this year
over and over in my head

I let them fall like the hail
wetting my face
making it far too real
