Last Sunlit Ray Of Happiness Poem by Uriah Hamilton

Last Sunlit Ray Of Happiness

Dear Lady who occupies all my thoughts
like a conquering army,
there have been so many times
alone in rooms with only candles and wine
where I have proposed to you.

I am not in a position, now,
nor likely in the future,
to make you a worthy companion
to travel through the ages together
with the simple dedication of children;
but is it wrong to have such a desire,
to gently mouth such a question as marriage?
could it not be received as a compliment
and your refusal as only expected?

I don't understand my earnest yearning
in this manner nor my inability to be insulted
by your customary rejection,
I have long ceased any expectation of eternal salvation
nor seek any solace from any known deities:
only the way your eyes bring light to a lonely room
can encourage any distant hope or last sunlit ray of happiness.

Is it not with the heart's best intention, imagining happily ever after....even if all the while knowing how the fabled romance ends... A beautiful declaration of affection. I am a fan of your craft. PEACE
