POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The open form stands out on the page. 'Chlorofluorocarbons'=an alkane used in refrigerators, aerosols, like air fresheners which I use a lot, , air conditioning'. It is claimed by some that it breaks down the earth's ozone layer, causing global warming. Global warming is itself very debatable and certainly not proven. Many scientists do not accept it.
This passionate, incantatory poem is very anti-green, which is good to see. In my country, the Green Party is always heard in the print and electronic media, implying that ordinary people should think twice about using aerosols, even cars. So this poem is liberating for me. At last someone is telling the truth. Green ideas are just theories, not facts. They needlessly alarm people, who have enough to worry about already.
Obviously, the poem is polemical, with a bitter, sarcastic tone, directed against green ideas. There is power in this incantation.
It needed to be said and written.
