Lexical Poetics Poem by Marcus McKinley

Lexical Poetics

Rating: 5.0

There is no such thing as an obsolete word
Just because you have never heard, or conversed
Or, even contemplated its existence first
Considering the mere history of it, or etymology
Challenging your intelligence simplistically
And, persisting linguistically, in a matter of speaking
Raises the question of your own intellection
Or, should I say bar of poetic creation

So, while you puzzle pejoratively at words unfamiliar
Stumble and stutter in absolute terror
Here is something you should remember

It wasn’t until 1755, that we had our first English Dictionary
43 years later Webster started his dictionary
And, it took him 27 years to finish,
learning 26 languages in the process

So, if you are having difficulty with your small vocabulary
maybe you should open a dictionary, and
stop being tetchy about terminology
when educating you is a poets conception!

And, maybe, just maybe
you will get a deeper sense of the poems meaning
expanding your mind and general well being
possibly seeing the world in a new light with erstwhile words
