Lifes Path Poem by Bev Haigh

Lifes Path

Sitting here I ponder
What is life about
Its not always easy
Of that there is no doubt

First of all we're given life
I ask myself, for why?
We live a life, sometimes short
And then we go and die!

At baby stage we gurgle
Look cute and so appealing
But if we want our little way
You'll hear us loudly squealing

Then along comes toddler stage
Mothers patience really tried
Right now she's probably thinking
‘I want to run away and hide'

Now I'm five its time for school
My uniform looks neat
Mum points to me and proudly says
Aww doesn't she look sweet

Its costing mum a fortune
I grow out of clothes so fast
She buys me lovely new ones
And hopes that they will last

Moving up to high school
I'm almost in my teens
I really need to go and buy
Some pimple and spot creams

I've sprouted two fried eggs
Upon my skinny chest
By now I have realised
These are my new breasts

I'm feeling really moody
I shout and slam the doors
All because my dearest mother
Asked me to do my chores

I'm now sixteen and leaving school
I'm moving onto college
I'll get a job later on
First I need to learn more knowledge

I revised so hard, reached good grades
Then came my graduation
In the crowd I saw my Mother
Looking on with adoration

Now here I am in this queue
Looking for employment
I had hoped my days at college
Would bring money and enjoyment!

I met a man, I got married
We had a grand affair
We made love every night
With the hope a child I'd bear

Then it finally happened
My family dream came true
It really made me realise
What my Mum went through

We had our ups and our downs
With lots of tears and laughter
My only hope in life was this
We'd live happy ever after

Now my child is all grown up
He's gone and flown the nest
I really, really miss him
My lad, he is the best

Now I've aged, I'm not so fit
my hair has turned all grey
I'm quite a little frailer
Than I was in my heyday

The following verse is my dream
They're words I pray to hear
I live in hope that this will be
With luck the time is near

You're going to be a grandma
I yell out lots of cheers
The news my son just gave me
Is music to my ears

My family keep me going
Thrive on the love they show
I'll continue enjoying life
Until its my time to go.
