Lightless Tomb Poem by Lily Ives

Lightless Tomb

Rating: 3.5

Run! Run!
Go and catch the light.
The final hour is upon us as the sun retreats
her formless embrace across the sea.
Her glow ebbs with the tide and threatens
to expose my fragile soul to the infinite darkness.
What if I never see the way the light flirts with his eyes
in chestnuts and caramels?
What if I never see an aquamarine sky drenched in molten
tangerine and peach jellies amongst flurries of pink cotton candy?
What if I never see a graciously tall sunflower raise her golden crown,
to greet the heavens before another breaking dawn?
My feet desperately dig into the sand and propel me forward,
but I fail to catch a speck of gold scattered by the Earth's mighty star.
Her blazing pout sighs another shallow breath over the horizon,
and the fire in her eyes fades to betray yet another day.
The sky bursts open with a gust of a thousand frantic bats
and summons all the shadows home.
The wintry night has fallen;
there's nothing left to see here.
This dampness and this unforgiving chill slowly
constricts and suffocates the life force fighting within me.
The cold mist descends upon my eyes,
and I am left alone in this vast and lightless tomb,
to lay benumbed of love and hatred of the living world.

'The cold mist descends on my eyes, and I am left alone in this vast lightless tomb, to lay benumbed of love and hatred of this living world' - the poem ends beautifully!
