Little Fools Poem by April Lane

Little Fools

See the happy girls and boys
Happy messes happy noise
Never playing by the rules
All the lovely little fools

Go and join them, it's ok
I'll stand here and watch you play
Pretty maidens in a queue
Go! They're waiting there for you

See them walking two by two
Grass is green and sky is blue
Chase each other, see them run
Tumbling, laughing in the sun

I grew up and you grew down
Set aside my flower crown
Still I wait outside the ring
For the man who would be king

Dance in circles hand in hand
Now he wears a wedding band
What a lovely pair they make
Stuff themselves with wedding cake

Crooked pathways seldom twine
You went yours and I went mine
Cut apart our tangled lives
With our little plastic knives

See the carousel go round
No way out of this playground
Iron bars and painted chrome
All the others have gone home

Clouds are darkening the sky
And the baby starts to cry
Too late to get off the ride
Hold her now, your blushing bride

Back and forth and back they swing
Every plunge more sickening
And the wheel only stops
When you're stranded at the top

This is how the story goes
Prick your finger on a rose
And the game is at an end
So this is goodbye, my friend

See the happy girls and boys
Happy messes happy noise
Never playing by the rules
All the lovely little fools
