Maman Poem by Laura Kiernan

Maman

What would it mean
If I called up my mom
And stayed in her house
For the next five years?

Would I forget to speak English
When I went out to lunch?
Or would she only speak French
To get my attention?

Would anyone guess
That I am her daughter
Or would they assume (like so many do)
That she's my aunt/sister/adopted mother?

What would I feel
When I walked through the door?
A welcoming home
Or a stranger's Paris chateau?
