Mamma’s Ecstasy Poem by Onaiza Simeen

Mamma’s Ecstasy

How I love to see my newborn babe-
Basking in the sunshine
Of his own Elysium,
Far, far away
From this care-worn world.

There are so many things
You try to tell me, my baby,
Bubbling with elated fantasy!
But your poor mother,
With a tainted heart,
Fails to comprehend you.
What is it that you say, my child?
Do you play with God?
Do you talk to yourself?
Or do you recollect old memories,
Regressing to your pre-natal bliss?

Do you remember, my child-
How daddy and I spoke to you,
When you were inside me?
We shared so much with you.
And daddy kissed my belly
Again and again,
Trying to reach you.
Poor daddy! I wish
He too had an umbilicus like us.

O, what do you try to tell me baby?
Smiling at my face with sparkling eyes,
Restlessly moving your hands and feet,
Babbling and cooing,
Sometimes gurgling with laughter,
Making myriads of sounds.
Wait, wait my love,
I’m trying to make out what you say,
Don’t hurry,
Mamma is far too ignorant, you know.

O my baby,
How I eagerly wait to hear you
Call me “Ma” some day.

Don’t cry, don’t cry, sweet child.
Are you scared, baby?
I know it’s a savage world,
But I’m right here for you, honey.
Rest your head upon my bosom,
Can you hear my heart beat?
Do they sound familiar?
Like the tick tock you used to hear
From my womb?
Yes, yes my baby, calm down,
Relax…………..
That’s like my beautiful baby.

Are you hungry, my angel?
Come,
Let me press you close to my breast,
And pour my sweet, warm
Milk of concord upon your soul.
Be gentle, my child,
You are hurting me with your tender gums.

Now, …let me tell you a story:
There once lived
A Princess and her Frog Prince….

You are gradually falling asleep,
Retreating into your paradise once again,
In the cloud kingdom of innocence.

Let the moon paint sweet dreams
Upon the canvas of your sleep.
Here, let mama give you
A sweet good night kiss
On your little forehead.

Good night, my love,
And sweeeeeeeeeeet dreams!
