Mary, Under Glass Poem by elysabeth faslund

Mary, Under Glass

Rating: 5.0

'Mary, Under Glass' served home-style
by the last, the first, waiter on the aisle
between the trees of Benediction
green. Under rain, under fog,
under night calls booming, screeching,
'Are you hungry, little pain? Do you pray
with muddy fingers, up to Heaven? '

Do you, have you, should you, little
customer? Linger over cheesecake
baked today...ask not the leaven,
or the crust...not what filling...in God
you must trust.
Not the waiter, waiting at Mass...
scribing 'Special Today' is
'Mary Under Glass'.

Addendum to my post of 6-20-07: An apologetic clarification is indicated regarding my prior comment as relating to this beautifully expressed and framed portrait of faith, feeling, insight and understanding. My reference to the author Mary McCarthy (One of Americas finest writers of the 20th century, she was a courageous, witty, and sophisticated rebel of sorts, unfortunately largely overlooked.) was made apropos of said authors autobiographical book 'Memories of a Catholic Girlhood'. My mention of this individual, so gifted - and under recognized, was, in view of her early religious upbringing, and later attitudes, at the very least, stupidly presumptuous. 'Mary Under Glass' is so very rich and touching. Aside from my personal religious convictions, retrospectively, it was most naive of me to make mention of any Mary in conjunction with reference to THE MARY! The poem 'Mary Under Glass' is blessedly refreshing in its innocence, acceptance of non-material virtues, thin metaphor of adoration, and the humble prioritizing and differentiation of that which is ever enduring.... so beautifully done, it should be included in the bulletin of Our Ladies holy day... Perhaps I'll make that recommendation! Thankfully yours , walt

See Part Eleven for my general comment. Loved the tone of this one. Matches the absurdity of the belief set under siege - justifiably in my view! Funny, highly pertinent and the work of a sharp and courageous mind. jim
