Masquerade Ball Poem by Justin Gildow

Masquerade Ball

Walking down the street
Decked out in a tuxedo
With a mask dangling in my right hand

At this masquerade ball
I await many surprises tonight
Maybe a date with destiny
Maybe finding a lover

I'll leave the more important things in life tonight to the invisible ones to take care of
They're smart and know what they're doing

With a special talent, they can blend effortlessly into the night

I finally arrive at the nightclub
And I slip my mask on
At midnight it'll come off

Outside as well as inside
Men wear tuxedos
Women wear gowns
And their faces are hidden behind their masks

The DJ, I can tell is going to enjoy tonight
He's going to have his fun
And me and countless others are going to have our fun tonight

Everything is so beautiful in here
From the array of colors
To the array of decorations

Right now
Some are sipping martinis
Some are downing glasses of vodka

It's a masquerade ball
All the guys are handsome
All the ladies are lovely
Everything is out in plain view
Ready and all set for the naked eye to see
Ready and all set for us all tonight to see

Of the people in here
Some are friends
Some are lovers
Some are enemies

Standing by a column
With 3 different colored balloons tied to it
I notice that a girl has made eye contact with me
Even though she's on the other side of the room
Hiding behind her mask
And flapping her fan in front of her
She smiles

She walks over to me
And extends her hand out to me
And we greet each other
And we talk about tonight
And we talk about the masquerade ball

After greetings and introductions
I put down my drink on a table
She puts down her fan on a table
She takes me by the hand
And leads me out to the floor to dance

Like I could tell earlier
The DJ is enjoying tonight
The music is reverberating off the walls
And everyone's dancing
Everyone's loving every minute of it
And as you and I dance
I can tell that this night, you and I both won't forget
I can tell that this night, you and I both will have no regrets

After dancing
You take me by the hand
As we try to find a place to be alone

After some effort
We finally find a room for the two of us

We grab 2 chairs
And just talk
While passing the minutes by until midnight
When we'll unmask ourselves

After a while
We finally get up and head back to the masquerade ball
With midnight drawing near

With midnight only a few minutes away
We share one last dance

After the last dance
We hold hands and stand beside each other
I grab my drink off the table
And she grabs her fan off the table
And we beging counting down the final minute to midnight

Midnight finally hits
And we unmask ourselves
And I feel that tonight was truly worth it for the both of us

As the party is over
And nothing else is left to see or experience
We both make our way to the front door

Once outside the masquerade ball
I ask if I can walk you home
And you say to me that that's not a problem in the least

So we hold hands
And begin walking
My mask dangles in my free hand
Your mask and fan dangles in your free hand

I hope the invisible ones did their jobs well tonight

As we walk
We're shined on by the moonlight
Letting the moon be our guide
As I walk you home
