Mirror Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Mirror

What is it,
Hidden behind the mirror.
Many of us,
Have become too hypocritical...
To face.
And frequently masked.
As if a task needing to replace,
What it is that is feared.
To thoroughly examine,
A truth to see.
Yet refuse to accept,
An honesty that is to be.

What is it,
That appears...
We all seem afraid to admit?
Is it...
Our own insecurities?

Wishing to hope not to show them.
Exposed to be revealed.
Is it approval we choose to seek.
And relieved when it is given.
From others who are also,
Threatened by reality.
Incapable to face and examine,
Or replace to chase away...
A reflection of ourselves.
As we are to be.
Before and not after,
The task of masking.

"Mirror, mirror on the wall.
Why is it that 'my' truth,
You don't reflect as I do.
To know or appear at all? "
